Absence is a direct cost to any business.

This is in terms of sick pay and in terms of loss of productivity and the impact on other members of staff.

Monitoring absence is the first step in reducing absence. Addressing absence situations promptly (either short-term or long-term absence) will also help minimise absence and keeps you in control of the situation.
